El Clasico is the biggest rivalry in Spanish football, and over its long history has produced some unforgettable encounters. Real Madrid have traditionally won more La Liga titles while Barcelona have fared much better in European competition - including two Champions League final victories!

Barca's most humiliating loss occurred in 1943, in the second leg of a Copa del Generalisimo semi-final (now known as the Europa League).

1. Messi

He won an unprecedented 10 league titles at Barcelona during his time there and became their all-time leading goalscorer, also taking home four UEFA Champions League championships along the way.

Under Luis Enrique in 2014/15, Neymar and Suarez made up the acclaimed MSN trio; helping his team win an unprecedented three-peat.

Messi is widely considered one of the greatest playmakers in soccer, adept at creating opportunities with precise passes and visionary passes. Additionally, his quickness allows him to evade defenders using impressive dribbling skills.

He excels at free kicks and penalty shootouts, being one of the greatest free-kickers ever seen. A former Argentina international, he can take shots with either foot. A former Ballon d'Or winner who earned seven major trophies throughout his career. Considered one of the greatest players ever.

2. Suarez

Catalan giants FC Barcelona were devastated to lose both the Champions League semi-finals and La Liga title race to Real Madrid. So, they set about finding a number 9 who would help improve their team efficiency overall.

Luis Suarez had just had an outstanding year with Liverpool, helping them finish second and scoring 49 goals overall - an exceptional season that had attracted them as they secured second place in the Premier League table. They signed him from Liverpool during the summer of 2014.

Although Suarez was an incredible goal scorer, he fell short of meeting Barcelona's lofty expectations. Many have described him as the poor man's version of Cristiano Ronaldo - someone who can shoot from anywhere and create chances for teammates without necessarily contributing more to team efficiency overall.

3. Carvajal

El Clasico proved no different; Luis Suarez fouled him intentionally to disrupt the game, yet was given a fifth yellow card as punishment. Zinedine Zidane benched him against Valencia as part of his efforts to manage cards; however, he may return against Real Sociedad.

Carvajal has been one of Madrid's standout defenders this season and among the league's premier players alongside Karim Benzema and Sergio Ramos. Additionally, he plays an instrumental part in Spain national team. His name derives from Spanish for oak woods or forests; there have been notable Jewish bearers of this surname as well.

4. Iniesta

Iniesta is widely regarded as Spain's finest midfielder. His dribbling, vision and poise make him one of the greatest complete players worldwide. Additionally, Iniesta excels as a passer and an organizer of play - qualities which have seen many successful seasons at Barcelona where his fans adore him immensely.

Barca team that won two Trebles. He holds 35 Trophies to his name. Additionally, he represented Spain multiple times, even winning the 2010 World Cup with them.

At Camp Nou, Iniesta has long been beloved. Most recently, his club gave him a lifetime contract. Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney once described Iniesta as being among the greatest players ever seen on a playing surface.

5. Messi

El Clasico's undisputed king is undisputedly Lionel Messi. With 24 goals scored in 23 matches against Real Madrid he holds both Clasico history's highest scoring player mark as well as holding the record for most goals scored in one UEFA Champions League game.

As much as Raul was rightly celebrated as Real Madrid's greatest player ever, Lionel Messi has overshadowed him. Messi is widely considered the world's greatest player - winning two Best FIFA Men's Player awards and many others such as the Ballon d'Or award as well as numerous La Liga and Champions League titles with Barcelona over his time there and scoring 286 goals overall - earning five trebles while becoming one of football's most decorated players ever!
