In December 2020, I was diagnosed with Antisynthetase Syndrome, which includes Dermatomyositis, Interstitial Lung Disease, and other symptoms. At the point of my diagnosis, I had reached a point where I could not get out of a chair without assistance, could not turn a deadbolt or hold a toothbrush, and could not climb stairs. I also needed oxygen therapy to counter the inflammation in my lungs. The time immediately after diagnosis, I was very scared and discouraged. I turned to the Myositis Association to learn about my disease. Myositis is rare, so there aren't many reliable places to go for information. As someone who feels more in control when I know everything I can about a problem, it was a huge relief to find the articles, video presentations, and webinars provided by TMA. It gave e more confidence to become an active part of my medical care, and helped me manage a lot of the fear and sadness. Today, with the help of medical intervention, I am walking without assistance (most of the time), and am weaning off of supplemental oxygen. While I'm not yet in remission (and may not ever be without the meds), I feel more hopeful and grateful for everything I have achieved. A big part of that has been due to connecting with the Myositis community.

What can you tell me about Tom Bennett Park?
Located at 400 Cypress Creek Blvd, Bradenton, FL, 34208, there are more than 200 acres of green space, lakes, trails, playgrounds and a handicapped accessible pavilion with restrooms and water fountains. Located just off the intersection of SR 64 and I-75 (Exit 220), it’s easy to find, if you turn north onto Kay Rd, between Wal-Mart and the Toyota Dealership. Then turn left onto Cypress Creek Blvd and the pavilion and parking are right there.

Each event will host a non-competitive fun walk, a festival of fitness demonstrations and activities, nutrition and wellness components, and family fun!
