Samson's Surgery

On November 20, we noticed that Samson was having difficulty breathing. We quickly found a lump on his neck that had not been there hours before. By the next morning, Samson's entire neck was swollen, he was running a fever, and he seemed lethargic. Our vet aspirated his neck and ran some xrays and she diagnosed Samson with salivary mucocele. This essentially means that one of his salivary glands is damaged and was leaking fluid into his neck.

We started treating the salivary mucocele with medication, in the hopes that the inflammation would decrease. The medication worked well and the swelling in Samson's neck reduced significantly. However, the salivary gland remained inflamed, and it is now growing in size. 

The next step is for Samson to undergo surgery, and this is scheduled for December 22. The vet recommended a procedure called marsupialization, which entails creating a hole for the fluid to drain into. If all goes well, this surgery should fix the problem. Because the neck is an area with a lot of nerves, the surgery requires a specialist.

So far, diagnosing and treating with medication has cost us $1,025. The surgery is quoted at $4,092. This is a huge expense that we were not planning on but there's really no other option. We just want Samson to be okay.
